$ git init
を行うことで、上記のエラーは解決しました。

その後、開発手順の、開発用ブランチの作成 にて git push するとエラーになってしまいます。

$ git remote add upstream https://github.com/EC-CUBE/ec-cube.git
$ git remote -v
upstream https://github.com/EC-CUBE/ec-cube.git (fetch)
upstream https://github.com/EC-CUBE/ec-cube.git (push)

$ git fetch upstream
$ git checkout -b user_branch upstream/master
Switched to a new branch 'user_branch'

$ git push origin user_branch

fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.
Please make sure you have the correct access rights
and the repository exists.
